Ok, you've been waiting for this for a while, I know. But here it is in response to jane_freak's list which you can find here.

This took a while to compile for me, because I had to consider some points. The initial question for me was the infamous marooned-on-an-island-questrion: Imagine if you have to live the next couple of years on an island (for whatever reasons): which 10 (or so) albums(/books/whatever) would you take with you.

In the case of music, this is a tricky one for me. Only 10 albums (multi-CD compilations are NOT allowed) for the next years! There has to be something for every mood, and it has to be music, which will not become boring after listening to it for the 143th time in 3 days. Having this in mind, I compiled this:

  • Mr. Bungle - Same
Brillant project of Mike Patton. If you want to know what music would result if Metallica, Frank Zappa an Monthy Python are performing together, check this one. This will never ever gonna be boring.
  • Max Reger - Complete Organ Works Vol. 3; Rosalinde Haas, Organ
Max Reger was a German composer and lived 1873-1916. This CD contains one of his most infamous compositions: Intoduction, Passacaglia and Fugue e-minor, Op.127. This was written 1913 as dedication to the Sauer-Organ in Breslau, which had 187 registers and was the biggest organ in Europe at that time. Karl Straube needed 40 minutes to play it on its first night, most organ players need 27 to 30 minutes, Rosalinde Haas does it in 23 (!) minutes on this CD. This is a frenzy!
The passacaglia has 27 Variations on a 8-bar theme. The fugue has 2 themes (double fugue), which are merged to a fulminant climax towards the end.
  • Eric Burdon declares War.
Long story behind this. Not to be told to everyone.
  • ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
  • Colosseum - Valentyne Suite
  • Frumpy - Live
These three, because i just love the music on them. Some very, very good Hammond solos here.
  • Marillion - Script for a jesters Tear
  • Pink Floyd - The Wall
These two, because without these albums, I would probably not have survived the dark phase(s) in my life.......................--------hm, okay......this brings us to:
  • Franz Liszt - Totentanz
I have an album with some piano concertos by Liszt, but 'Totentanz' kills it all. Really great. It is a paraphrase on 'Dies irae'. You might know the melody: It is the title melody of the movie 'Shining' by Kubrick, and Argent used it as well. Check the the first track on Argent's 'Encore'-Album: 'The Coming of Kohoutek'. This is also a variation of the 'Dies irae' chant.
  • Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
Great soulful bassplaying by Pastorius. Saxes by Shorter.

Ok, that's it! This took a while to compile, and it was not an easy thing to do. Took me weeks. You are probably missing some other great recordings and so do I, but it was my goal to limit this to ten albums.
This list is in no particular order. No ranking from 1 to 10 or so.
Now, it is up to you to leave some comments on this and to do your own list of 10. I'm very curious about it.
Hi,

a rather interesting list indeed. Thumbup
But non of these discs could be found in my list of island-discs (and I's never be that foolish and travel on any lonely island; except Iceland maybe Icon_lol - because the music's great there)...

I really don't like metal... I don't know Mr. Bungle, but Metallica is a very overrated band IMO ... great if you like it - but not my band ... Icon_smile

Church organ music in the Top10-List of a Krautrock-Listener ... that's strange... Icon_lol But it sure sounds very interesting ... will have a look at it at Amazon or Youtube...

Eric Burdon (it doesn't matter if with the late Animals or not) ist very good, but I just know "Sky Pilot" and "America 1963 New York 1968" (or how it is called... I don't know because of that quirky name)

Zitat:
[*]ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

For me one of the weaker albums of ELP ... "Jerusalem" and "Toccata" are really good, but "Karn Evil" is rather boring ... too mechanic and too less emotional.
"Trilogy" would be my favorite, because all of the (hidden) ELP classics are gathered there... maybe I didn't give BBS enough chances ...

Live on the Welcome-Back-CDs I like it very much, maybe the live athmosphere makes that magnus opus better ...

Zitat:
[*]Colosseum - Valentyne Suite

Yes, of course ... not an island LP for me, but a very great one... I personally prefer "Live", although the dumpling vocals which are great for a short time get on my nerves after 70 minutes ... the bonus material just weakens the "Live"-CD ... but that isn't the case here... Icon_smile

[*]Frumpy - Live
These three, because i just love the music on them. Some very, very good Hammond solos here.

[*]Marrilion - Script for a jesters Tear

Don't know those ones ...

Zitat:
[*]Pink Floyd - The Wall
These two, because without these albums, I would probably not have survived the dark phase(s) in my life.......................--------hm,

A perfect rock longplayer, very emotional and *much* better than Waters' solo efforts... Thumbup

Even more classic music ... Franz Liszt ist great, but I don't know the "Totentanz" ...

[*]Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
Great soulful bassplaying by Patorius. Saxes by Shorter.

Very great, too. Thumbup

For me it isn't too difficult because there are a few albums that really have everything I need ... I'll try my luck. Nar

Best wishes,
Max

Wow...I only know of two albums on Kawuum list - Pink Floyd and Collisseum. Interesting list - i will have to check some of these musical works.

Hmmm..on an Island....OK....I would take the following:

Jane - Together

Jane - Live at Home

Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live

Lucifer's Friend

Mythos - Dreamlab

Culpeper's Orchard

Captain Beyond

Amon Duul II "Yeti"

Eloy "Inside"

Popol Vuh "Letzte Tage Letzte Nacht" oder Rufus Zuphall "Weiss Der Teufel" (Schwere Auswahl)

oh, man...what a difficult decision for sure Icon_smile

Bleib Cool Euch ! Icon_smile
